What is an AI agent? A plain-language answer

Answers · AI agents and custom builds

An AI agent is software that takes on a job and does the steps itself, instead of only answering a question. A chatbot replies when you ask. An agent can check things, make a draft and write down what it did, often on a schedule. Westward builds agents for businesses, with a person approving anything important or public.

Agent or chatbot

A chatbot waits for you to type something and answers. An agent is given a job and works through it. It may look something up, make a decision within limits, produce a result and report back.

The line is not sharp. Some tools do both. What matters is whether the software carries out the steps of a job or only talks about it.

What one looks like

Westward’s SEO agent is one example. Every day it measures how many of the site’s pages Google has, submits pages, fixes what holds them back and writes down what it did. It sets dated targets in advance, so you can see right away if it is slipping.

Another example is a CRM agent that reads each client’s email every morning and updates a brief and a to-do list.

What it cannot do

An agent can be wrong. It can misread an email or miss something, which is why a person should check anything important and why AI-written text should be marked.

It is also not a replacement for judgment. It is better at a repeated job with clear steps than at a one-off decision.

Agents also need rules. Without limits, an agent can do the wrong thing, so the limits are written down before it starts.

Do you need one?

A simple test: do you repeat a job on a schedule, with steps you could write on one page? If yes, an agent may help. If the job is rare or changes every time, probably not.

If you are not sure what you would hand over, that is normal. Many owners do not know what they want yet. The free 30-minute first call with Westward’s founder is for finding the job, not for selling you an agent.

Questions

Is an AI agent the same as a chatbot?

Not exactly. A chatbot answers questions you type. An agent is set up to do a job in steps and report on it, and may use a chat model inside.

Are AI agents safe?

They are as safe as the limits placed on them. We write down what an agent can do and must never touch, and a person approves anything important or public.

Does an agent replace people?

It takes over repeated tasks. A person still decides, approves and handles anything that needs judgment.
