How to start using AI in your business
Answers · Getting started
Start with one job that repeats and costs you time, try AI on a small piece of it with a person checking the result, and add more only after it works. You do not need a big plan or a technical team. If you want help choosing the first job, Westward’s first call is free and takes 30 minutes.
Start with one job
The mistake is trying to use AI everywhere. Pick one task. Good first tasks are boring, happen often, and have a clear right answer: drafting replies to common emails, writing call notes, or following up with past customers. If you are stuck, ask each person on your team which task they would hand off first. Whatever repeats across the answers is a good place to look.
Keep a person in charge
In the beginning, let AI draft and let a person approve. Read what it wrote before it goes out. As you see it get things right, you can give it more room. Anything public or important should always have a person on it.
Write down a few rules
Decide what you will not put into an AI tool: passwords, private customer records, anything your customers would not expect you to share. Decide who checks the work. Two or three written lines are enough to start.
How to tell if it worked
Compare before and after. How long did the task take last month, and how long does it take now? How many mistakes did a person catch? If the answer is better, do the next job. If not, change the approach or stop. Stopping is a fine result.
When to ask for help
If you cannot decide what to start with, or the job touches your client records and email, get help. Westward audits the work in week 1, builds in weeks 2 and 3, and sets up and trains your team in week 4. If AI will not help with your job, we say so.
Step by step
- For one week, write down the tasks you or your team repeat.
- Circle the one that costs the most time.
- Try AI on a small piece of it, with a person checking every result.
- Write the rules: what AI may touch, what it may not, who approves.
- Compare the time before and after. If it helped, do the next job.

Questions
Do I need to hire a technical person?
No. Start with simple tools and one task. When you want something built around your own files and steps, a firm like Westward can do that.
What if it makes a mistake?
It will sometimes. That is why a person approves anything important or public, and why you start small.
How long does it take to get started?
A small first try on a simple task can be quick. A first build with Westward takes about a month: an audit, then the build, then setup and training.
Which job should I pick first?
The one that repeats most and has a clear right answer. On the free call we help you choose, with options and examples.
