How to get your business recommended by ChatGPT

Answers · SEO and GEO

No one can guarantee that ChatGPT will recommend your business, and anyone who promises it is guessing. What you can do is make your business easy to find and easy to describe: clear pages, an accurate business profile, real reviews and the same details everywhere online. Westward’s GEO agent checks the questions your customers ask and fixes what it can on your side.

How ChatGPT decides what to say

An assistant like ChatGPT can answer from what it learned in training, and it can also search the web while it answers. When it searches, it reads web pages, business profiles and other sources. The companies do not publish exactly how it picks which businesses to name.

What tends to help is what helps a person: a business that is easy to understand, and that other places agree about.

Make sure your name is unmistakable

If your business name is common, an assistant can mix you up with another company. In our check on October 4, 2026, Perplexity confused Westward with a firm that has a similar name. Say who you are and where, in the same words, on your site and on every profile.

What our own first check showed

That October 4 check used Google AI Mode and Perplexity, not ChatGPT, across 11 customer-style questions. Westward was named in 0 of 11. We are telling you because it is the honest starting point, and because it shows why the steps below matter before any tool does.

As of October 7, our Google Business Profile had one review. Getting more is on our own to-do list.

Do it yourself or get help

The steps are free and take an afternoon to set up. Help makes sense if you will not check every month. Westward offers a free 30-minute first call with the founder, and a person approves anything that goes public. We do not publish prices: you get a fixed price in writing before anything is built.

Step by step

  1. Write down five questions a customer might ask, such as “Who is a good bookkeeper for a small restaurant in Santa Monica?”
  2. Ask them in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode. Save each answer and note whether you were named. Ask each question a few times, because answers can change.
  3. Put a plain two-sentence summary of what you do, where, and for whom at the top of your home page and each service page.
  4. Complete your Google Business Profile, and ask happy customers for honest reviews.
  5. Use the same business name, service area, phone number and description on your site and every profile.
  6. Get listed where your trade or neighborhood is listed, such as local directories and a chamber of commerce.
  7. Check again in a month and keep notes, so you can see whether anything moved.

Who can do this for you

Westward builds these and sets them up. Each page shows what it does and what it has done.

Questions

Can anyone guarantee a ChatGPT recommendation?

No. The assistants do not publish how they choose, and the answers change. Be wary of anyone who sells a guaranteed mention.

How long does it take?

No one can say. A profile or a page can be fixed in days, but how quickly any assistant changes its answers varies. Check monthly and trust the count, not a promise.

Do I need an llms.txt file?

It is not required. It is a proposed convention, not a standard every AI reads. It is cheap to add, but clear pages and an accurate profile matter more.
