Today in AI, Oct 7: AI agents move into Jira and SAP
OpenAI models come to Atlassian, SAP turns Joule into business agents, Mistral previews Large 4 and California sets AI firing rules, in pictures.

Today's AI news is about agents landing inside the software companies already pay for, from Jira to SAP, paid for by use, while California says a person still has to check any decision they drive about a worker. Here is the day in pictures, each with its source.
California will require a human check before AI-driven firing
Governor Gavin Newsom signed SB 947, the "No Robo Bosses Act", on September 30 (Ogletree). A person has to independently review an automated system's output before an employer disciplines or fires someone, starting July 1, 2027. He also signed AB 1883, which bans workplace AI tools that infer a person's emotional state.
The figure shows the start date and what each bill requires.

What it means: if you use software to score, schedule or discipline California staff, plan now for a person to sign off on every decision it drives.
OpenAI models will power agents across Atlassian
Atlassian and OpenAI expanded their partnership so that OpenAI's frontier models, including GPT-6 Astra, power agents across Atlassian's platform and Rovo (OpenAI). Rovo draws on Atlassian's Teamwork Graph, which links Jira tickets, Confluence pages, people and decisions.
This is OpenAI's own announcement page.

The figure pulls out the number in the announcement and what the deal covers.

What it means: if your team already runs on Jira or Confluence, AI agents are arriving inside those tools, so check who can see what before you switch them on.
SAP turned its Joule assistant into a layer of business agents
SAP made its Autonomous Enterprise architecture generally available and introduced Joule Work and Joule Desktop, with updated agents for finance, supply chain, spending, workforce and customer experience (SiliconANGLE). The capabilities roll out through October.
Here is SAP's own press release.

The table sums up what SAP turned on and how it will charge for it.

What it means: usage-based pricing for agents means the bill grows with use, so ask for a cap and a usage report before you turn them on.
Mistral opened a preview of Large 4, with open weights to follow
French lab Mistral opened public preview access to Mistral Large 4, its most capable model so far, on its cloud platform (SiliconANGLE). Mistral said it will release the model's weights later this month.
This is the model card on Mistral's own announcement page.

The chart draws the model's size to one scale: about 1 trillion parameters, of which only 49 billion are active when it runs.

What it means: a large model you can host yourself gives businesses that cannot send data to an outside AI vendor another option to test.
The U.S. trade deficit widened to $105.6 billion
The Commerce Department said the U.S. trade deficit was $105.6 billion in August, the largest since March 2025, when it was $132.98 billion (CNBC). Economists polled by Dow Jones had expected $102 billion.
The chart draws all three numbers from zero on one scale.

What it means: if you import goods or parts, a wider gap usually means more scrutiny of trade, so keep your supplier options open.
Two big deals: Warner Bros. Discovery and Option Care Health
Paramount Skydance closed its $110 billion purchase of Warner Bros. Discovery on Tuesday, ending a year-long takeover fight (CNBC). The combined company is named Skydance Corp. The same day, Clayton, Dubilier & Rice and McKesson agreed to buy home infusion provider Option Care Health for $32.05 a share in cash, an enterprise value of about $5.8 billion.
The figure puts the two deals side by side, and on one scale.

What it means: fewer, larger media owners can mean fewer places to buy ads and less room to negotiate on price, and more care is moving out of hospitals and into homes, with large buyers paying to own that shift.
The S&P 500 and Nasdaq closed at records
On Tuesday the S&P 500 rose 0.58% to a record close of 7,818.93, the Nasdaq Composite rose 0.45% to a record 27,599.79, and the Dow gained 0.49% to 51,521.28 (CNBC). Chip and AI infrastructure stocks led, with Marvell up more than 7% in morning trading, a move during the session, after it gave a long-term revenue outlook above analysts' estimates. With yields still high, a jump in borrowing costs can reverse moves like these quickly. This is a picture of the day, not advice.

The pattern
Today's AI news is about agents landing inside the software companies already pay for, from Jira to SAP, and paid for by use. California's new law is the other side of it: when a system drives a decision about a person, a person still has to check it. Both point to the same habit: know what an agent can touch, what it costs, and who signs off.
