AI-media checks a day, according to Google

Oct 6 · TechCrunch

Google opened a free website that checks if media was made with AI

What it means for you: A clean result is not proof a file is real, so treat the check as one signal when a photo or voice message looks off.

Google launched synthid.com, where anyone can upload an image, video or audio clip and see whether it carries Google's SynthID watermark. Google says its own image, video and music models mark their output this way, and OpenAI, Nvidia and Kakao also support it. Google says people make 1 million verification requests a day. TechCrunch notes that watermark checkers from different makers often miss content made by other companies' models.

At an event in San Francisco on October 7, Microsoft showed the Surface Laptop Ultra, starting at $2,600, and a $6,000 Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, both made to run AI models on the device itself. The pattern in AI

Two of the AI stories are about control: a sandbox for agents on Windows and a way to check whether media is real. The business news points the same way, with rates and prices that are harder to predict. Both ask for the same habit: know what a tool is allowed to do, and check before acting.

Fed minutes: most officials see another rate hike by year end

What it means for you: If you borrow on a variable rate, plan as though costs can rise again before the year is out.

Full story

Minutes of the Federal Reserve's September meeting, released October 7, say most participants judged another increase in the target range would likely be appropriate by year end. Persistently higher prices and a stable labor market were the reasons given. The minutes do not say when the next hike would come.

Households expect 3.9% inflation over the next year

What it means for you: When customers expect higher prices, they tend to notice a price rise from you less, but they also watch their own spending more closely.

Dow Jones−0.66%

Our view: Higher bond yields and a Fed that signals more hikes were the weight on stocks. Moves after record highs can reverse quickly in either direction.

This is a summary of the news, not investment advice. Markets move, and past moves do not predict the next one.

If you run one of these

Real estate: Interactive calculators inside ChatGPT answers make a mortgage or rent comparison something a client can adjust in the chat, with you checking the inputs.

Investment trackers: The agent sandbox in Windows is the same idea we use for reports: an agent should work in a fenced space, with a person approving what leaves it.

Family offices: A watermark check is one signal when a document or voice message arrives out of the blue, and a call back to a known number is still the real check.
