Missing calls after hours? Your four options, compared

When a call goes to voicemail after closing, many callers simply try the next business on the list. There are four ways to fix it: forward calls to your cell, pay an answering service, hire someone, or set up an AI phone agent that takes messages, books visits and sends urgent calls to you. Here is how they compare.

Updated October 4, 2026. Written by Westward, an AI consulting firm in Venice, California. We set up one of these options, so we say where each one fits, including the ones we do not sell.

What a missed call costs you

Skip other people's statistics and work out your own number. Count last month's missed calls from your phone log. Guess how many were new customers. Multiply by how often a new caller becomes a job, and by what an average job is worth to you. If that number is bigger than the cost of the cheapest option above, it is worth fixing.

Calls that should always reach a person

Whatever you choose, decide first which calls must never be handled by a machine or a stranger. Owners care about this: in a 2026 Simply Business survey of 1,047 small business owners, 86% said being able to speak to a human matters when dealing with an AI-led service. These are the rules we start from:

Plumbing, HVAC, electrical, roofing

No heat, no water, flooding or a burning smell goes straight to the on-call tech. Quotes and routine bookings can wait for a message or a booked slot.

Dental and medical offices

New patients can book or leave details. Anything about pain, bleeding or a reaction goes to a person, and the message never asks for health details it does not need.

Law firms

New matters get a short intake and a callback time. No advice is given, and nothing about the case is stored in tools the firm has not approved.

Property management

Leaks, lockouts and anything unsafe go to the on-call person. Routine repair requests are logged with the unit and a photo link.

Golf clubs and hospitality

Tee times, reservations and hours are answered and booked. Complaints and events go to the manager.

AI phone agents: what they do well, and where they fail

They are good at the same questions asked a hundred times: hours, prices you already publish, booking a slot, taking a message with the caller's name, number and what they need. They fail when they guess, when an upset caller cannot get to a person, or when nobody checks what they said. A setup worth having tells callers how to reach a person, sends urgent calls straight to you, and is tested on real calls before it goes live. You should be able to switch it off.

Keeping your staff

None of these options needs to replace the person who answers your phone today. The usual fit is overflow: the calls that come in after closing, at lunch, or while everyone is on a job. If you work alone, see help for founders and operators.

How Westward sets it up

We start with an audit of your calls. It ends with a preview of what you want built, a quote, and an honest assessment of whether Westward can deliver the right solution for you. If forwarding to your cell or an answering service fits better, we will say so. If we build it, a person approves anything it sends, the price is fixed and in writing, and we work on site across Los Angeles and Orange County. Prefer the phone? Call (424) 422-5031.
