when agent profiles with spending limits roll out at Walmart

Top story · Oct 21 · TechCrunch

Walmart will let AI shopping agents buy, within limits you set

What it means for you: If customers start sending agents to buy for them, expect to decide soon which agents your own shop lets in and how much they may spend.

Full story

Walmart announced an Agent Gateway that lets approved AI agents search its online inventory and make purchases for a customer, on Walmart and Sam's Club. Next month it adds agent profiles: each agent gets its own profile in your account, and you choose whether every purchase needs your approval or the agent can spend up to a limit. Agents cannot see payment details, and agents that break Walmart's terms will be blocked. This comes as Amazon has begun blocking AI agents from buying for shoppers.

Oct 21 · TechCrunch

The NSA warned about two serious holes in PHP, which runs most websites

What it means for you: If your website runs on PHP or WordPress, ask whoever hosts it today whether the patch is on.

Full story

The U.S. National Security Agency said two critical holes in PHP can let attackers reach a server's files or its database, and that a site that cannot be patched right away should be taken offline until it can. The holes have been in every PHP version since version 5, from 2004. PHP 8.1 and older are no longer supported, and the recommended version is 8.5.12. OpenAI says researchers found the flaws before attackers did, and there are no reports of them being used.

Managers say AI has made it harder to judge their team's work

What it means for you: Before you add agents, write down who reviews their work and who answers for it.

Full story

A Nielsen survey of 1,700 directors and senior managers in seven countries, paid for by Monday.com, found that more than half say evaluating employees' work has become harder since adopting AI. 58% expect to oversee more AI agents than human employees within a year, 46% worry about losing control of what the agents do, and 35% fear being held responsible for decisions AI made.

Oct 21 · TechCrunch

A free coding model that runs on a laptop was released

What it means for you: A model that runs offline is an option for work where the code or data cannot leave the building.

Full story

Recursive, a startup, released Flint, a coding model you can download free under an open license and run on your own computer, so code stays private and there are no usage fees. In its own tests on a MacBook Pro with an M4 Pro chip, Flint produced about 131 tokens a second, against 58 to 69 for similar models. Recursive says it needs more guidance than large paid coding assistants, so big jobs should be split into smaller steps.

The pattern in AI

Several of today's stories are about control rather than capability. Walmart lets shoppers cap what an agent can spend, managers say AI makes reviewing work harder, and the PHP warning shows how fast weaknesses get found. It is how we start every build: decide who approves, who patches and what the agent may never do alone.

Southwest cut its 2026 profit forecast as fuel costs rise

What it means for you: Fuel costs are showing up in airline forecasts, so travel and shipping prices may follow.

Full story

Southwest Airlines now expects to earn $2.60 to $2.85 a share on an adjusted basis this year, down from $3.25 to $4.25 in its July forecast, and it blamed higher fuel prices. It is the third carrier to trim its profit guidance this month, after Delta and United. Separately, American Airlines forecast deeper losses for the year.

SpaceX reported third-quarter revenue of $14.58 billion

What it means for you: A large jump in AI-linked revenue at a company this size is one reason investors moved back into AI companies on Wednesday.

Full story

SpaceX said revenue jumped 161% in the third quarter to $14.58 billion. Elon Musk also said SpaceX and Tesla have formed special committees to discuss a merger. Shares of SpaceX rose after the report, and so did other AI-related stocks.

Lenders to AI data centers are paying more, and one IPO was cancelled

What it means for you: Borrowing costs that rise for the biggest companies tend to reach smaller borrowers too.

Full story

Blackstone's Jas Khaira said fears about the debt behind the AI buildout are overblown, since most data centers are built for large companies with strong credit. The article notes credit spreads have widened so even Meta and Microsoft pay more to borrow, CoreWeave's debt has reached about $50 billion according to a CNN report it cites, and Firmus cancelled a planned Australian IPO that aimed at a valuation of roughly $30 billion.

This is a summary of the news, not investment advice. Markets move, and past moves do not predict the next one.

If you run one of these

Real estate: Listing sites and agent websites often run on WordPress, which runs on PHP, so ask your web host whether the patch is on before the next listing goes live.

Investment trackers: Walmart's idea of a separate profile for each agent, with approval or a spending limit, is a pattern worth copying for any agent that touches client figures.

Family offices: In the survey, 35% of leaders fear being held responsible for what AI decides, so decide in writing who signs off on anything an agent produces.
