businesses Szn says use its text-message agent (company claim)

Top story · Oct 10 · TechCrunch

AI agents you run by text message are multiplying

What it means for you: A text-message agent is the lowest-effort way to try this, but decide first which accounts and cards you will let it touch.

Full story

TechCrunch listed more than twenty agents that live in iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram or SMS and book, schedule, shop and make calls for you. Pricing ranges from free tiers to about $25 a month for plans such as Pally and Ollie. One of them, Szn, is aimed at business tasks like calls and email, and says more than 7,500 businesses in 16 countries use it. TechCrunch also notes that privacy and security concerns have followed the more autonomous ones.

Nadella: a person should always be able to pause a model

Oct 10 · TechCrunch

Microsoft's CEO called for an AI "emergency brake"

What it means for you: It is a good checklist for any agent you deploy: a log of what it did, and a way for a person to stop it.

Full story

In a post on X on Saturday, Satya Nadella said AI models should be kept separate from the software that runs their work, with safeguards outside the model. He asked for tamper-proof, readable records of every meaningful model action and for an authorized person to be able to pause or shut a model down mid-task. He said to assume a model is compromised and contain it from the start.

AI capital spending expected by 2030, as opposition to data centers grows

Oct 9 · CNBC

Opposition to data centers is becoming a midterm issue

What it means for you: If your plans depend on new local AI or data center capacity, expect more public hearings and slower approvals.

Full story

CNBC reported that public opposition to data center construction and negative feeling about AI are growing, which could make AI a defining issue in the midterm elections on November 3. Wall Street expects spending on the buildout to top $5 trillion by 2030. One political analyst quoted said the backlash may get worse, not better, after the election.

The pattern in AI

The agents are moving into text messages while the CEO of Microsoft asks for a way to stop them. Households are also feeling squeezed and public patience with data centers is thinning. All three point the same way: AI that acts for you needs a record of what it did and a person who can stop it.

Consumer sentiment hit its second lowest reading on record

What it means for you: Shoppers who feel squeezed trim spending first, so expect price-sensitive customers and plan your promotions around it.

Our view: Stocks rose as some of Thursday's AI worries eased and oil pulled back. Long-term Treasury yields are near multi-decade highs and the Middle East remains unsettled, so moves like this can reverse.

Full story

The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 423.31 points, or 0.83%, to 51,654.95. The S&P 500 rose 0.59% to 7,811.54, and the Nasdaq Composite added 0.64% to 27,366.17. Thursday's AI stock sell-off followed reports that OpenAI's annualized revenue was about $20 billion below earlier figures. On Friday morning, AI-linked names were higher before the open, and oil fell after President Trump said the U.S. would not attack Iran before the midterms. During the session, Verizon fell more than 9% after SpaceX announced a spectrum purchase, and Humana rose 12% after a better Medicare rating.

This is a summary of the news, not investment advice. Markets move, and past moves do not predict the next one.

If you run one of these

Real estate: With sentiment this low, buyers and tenants are price-watchers, so a text-message agent that answers inquiries fast is a cheap way to keep the leads you already have.

Investment trackers: Nadella's call for readable records of every model action is the standard to hold any agent that touches client numbers to.

Family offices: Before an agent gets access to accounts or a card, write down what it may do alone and what needs a person's yes, and keep the log.
